The RV Inverter
An inverter is a device that changes 12 volt battery power
to 120 volt AC power. It is used when "boondocking" (camping
without hookups) to power certain 120 VAC only devices like a
microwave oven. The amount of available power depends on the
storage capacity of the batteries and the wattage rating of the
inverter.
Small inverters, up to about 300 watts, are useful for
powering a laptop or a small TV or similar devices. These have
a 12 volt cigarette lighter type of plug for use in a power
point 12 volt outlet.
Larger inverters are needed to power microwave ovens, hair
driers and similar items.
