1. Always use a water pressure regulator on city water connections. Unregulated campground water valves frequently surge to high pressures that can rupture your delicate internal PEX plumbing lines and plastic fittings. Remember to disconnect and pack it with you when you leave your rig.
2. Keep your grey tank valve closed until after you dump your black tank. The massive volume of soapy wastewater collected from your shower and sinks acts as a high-velocity flushing fluid, completely rinsing residual solid waste out of your sewer hose.
3. Use a smartphone or laminated checklist prior to every single departure. It is remarkably easy to forget minor tasks like stowing your shore power cords, retracting the entry steps, lowering the roof antenna, or checking tire air pressures. Checklists prevent expensive structural mistakes.
4. Light your propane stove first before attempting to ignite your automated RV furnace, refrigerator, or Dometic water heater. Running a burner on the stove for a minute purges pockets of air out of the main gas plumbing lines, ensuring quick, safe ignition of your major appliances.
5. Inspect your roof sealant twice a year without exception. Check the lap sealant around all vents, skylights, and roof seams for hairline cracks. Water intrusion is the single most expensive type of damage an RV can suffer, and it is entirely preventable with timely caulking touch-ups.
